The Wayuu Community of La Guajira and Their Iconic Mochilas The Wayuu people are an Indigenous community living in La Guajira, a desert peninsula in northern Colombia. Despite the region’s harsh climate and limited resources, the Wayuu have preserved their language (Wayuunaiki), matrilineal social structure, and centuries-old cultural traditions. One of the most important and recognisable expressions of Wayuu heritage is the Wayuu mochila, a handwoven bag made by women using intricate crochet techniques. Each bag is a unique creation, rich in symbolic patterns known as kanaas, which reflect nature, spirituality, and personal stories.
